Be Debt-Free
Did you know that according to different surveys, a lot of Filipinos are currently in debt? Some reasons are legitimate. For one, people go into debt because they have a hard time keeping up with the increasing costs of goods and services. Ang iba naman, dahil sa lifestyle choices nila kaya sila nababaon sa utang. They want to upgrade their gadgets, buy cars, or travel to different places even if they don’t have the budget.
While some may argue that debt is OK as long as you’re able to pay for it, the Bible gives some insights regarding this issue. Una, ang taong nangungutang ay nagiging alipin. Proverbs 22:7 (NIV) says, “The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is slave to the lender.” Maraming may utang ang hirap makatulog at walang peace sa kanilang buhay. Accumulating debt may also be a sign of our struggle in trusting God to provide for our needs. We may eventually put our faith in loaning apps to meet our needs instead of God’s abundant resources. Ultimately, going into debt is not God’s will for anyone. He wants all of us to be free from any kind of bondage, finances included.
If you are under the bondage of debt today, remember that God provides the ability for you to pay it in full. In the story of 2 Kings chapter 4:1–7, God used Elisha to help a widow to pay off her debts. This story is a comforting reminder that God can provide for us when we fully trust and surrender everything to Him. Another person that God helped during a time of need was Paul during his imprisonment. God used the people at Philippi to bring him financial aid and a helper. In this instance and more, we learn that God surely knows what’s best for His people.
Let’s always remember that God’s hand is never too short. When we pray in faith, God may reveal wisdom and opportunities so that we can be debt-free.
LET’S PRAY
