1 Samuel‬ 18‬:3‬–4‬

The story of David and Jonathan is one of the most beautiful examples of friendship in the Bible. Despite being the son of king Saul who has a growing hatred for David, Jonathan supported his friend even if it meant risking his life to protect David from danger. This friendship was rooted in mutual respect, love, trust, and shared devotion to God.

Jonathan valued David for his godly character. He sought to protect and encourage his friend for his calling, serving as a confidante and brother in faith. Their friendship shows what it means to have a godly bond — one that is never self-seeking and self-centered but committed to seeking each other’s well-being.

Through their story, we can learn the important values of a godly friendship:

1. Loyalty and faithfulness: A godly friend stands by you in good and bad times. Jonathan did not abandon David when Saul turned against him.

2. Honesty and integrity: Jonathan spoke truthfully with David and did not hide his father’s evil plans (1 Samuel 20:12–13). Being honest doesn’t mean hurting others, but rather speaking the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15).

3. Encouragement: Just as Jonathan strengthened David’s hand in God, a godly friend points you back to God in times of fear and discouragement.

4. Selflessness and sacrifice: True friendship often requires putting the needs of others above your own. Jonathan willingly gave up his right to the throne for David, understanding that God had chosen his friend.

The friends you choose will have a profound impact on your life. So learn to surround yourself with the right people who can help you grow.

LET’S PRAY

Lord, thank You for the gift of friendship. Please help me be a friend like Jonathan and guide me in choosing friends wisely. May my relationship with them point them to Your grace, love, and truth. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
