Rehoboam was the next king after his father, King Solomon. All of his father’s advisors supported the new king so when trouble arose among the people, Rehoboam sought their advice. They advised him to show kindness to the people, but Rehoboam didn’t like this approach.

He asked his younger advisors who were the same age as him, and their instruction, though more cruel, was more appealing to the young king. So, he followed their advice rather than the older advisors. This was a foolish move on Rehoboam’s part because it started a great rebellion among the people that divided the kingdom into two.

Sino ang hinihingan mo ng advice? Siguro ay sila ang mga taong mas mature sa iyo. Puwedeng parents mo, mentor mo, or small group leader mo. You seek counsel from them because they are wiser and more experienced in life. At alam mo rin na hindi ka nila ipapahamak. But what if their advice is different from what you want to hear? Makikinig ka pa ba o maghahanap ng ibang magsasabi kung ano ang gusto mong marinig?

Alam mo ba na seeking godly counsel is a blessing? Una, kapag nakikinig sa payo ng mas mature sa atin, nabubuksan ang isip natin sa ibang pananaw. May blind spots kasi tayo kaya we do not see what they see. Pangalawa, godly counsel focuses on what God wants for us rather than what the world wants. Pangatlo, napo-protektahan din tayo from the consequences of unwise choices. At panghuli, sabi nga sa Proverbs 15:22, our plans will succeed if we seek wise counsel. Gusto mo bang maging maayos ang mga plano mo? Seek godly counsel.
