Are You a Nathan?
“Bakit mo hinamak ang salita ni Yahweh at gumawa ka ng masama sa kanyang paningin? Ipinapatay mo ang Heteong si Urias sa mga Ammonita at kinuha mo pa ang kanyang asawa.”
2 Samuel 12:9
Madali mo bang napapansin kapag may maling ginagawa ang kaibigan o kapamilya mo? And do you actually talk to the person about it?
May gumawa nito kay David who sinned when he slept with Bathsheba, Uriah’s wife. Israel’s king devised a plan para mamatay si Uriah to cover up the consequences of David’s actions. David’s plan may have succeeded, but the Lord sent the prophet Nathan to rebuke him. Nung inexpose ni Nathan ang kasalanan ni David, David confessed and accepted his fate.
When a person close to you lives an ungodly life or commits sin, do you quickly call him or her out? Reprimanding someone is not an easy task. People avoid confrontations to preserve the relationship or avoid being called judgmental or self-righteous. They insist on turning a blind eye rather than lovingly correcting the other.
A parent who scolds his misbehaving child does it out of love. He does not want the child to get into deeper trouble because of his wrong behavior. He calls out the bad attitude or behavior and leads the child back to the right path. However, this loving correction can only happen in the context of a close relationship.
Are you a “Nathan”? Are you willing to risk your relationships to pull someone from the downward spiral of sin? Do you want your friend to come to God and learn from Him?
Being a Nathan in today’s world is challenging. But if Jesus calls you to be one, you will be His mouthpiece and restore that person to Him.
LET’S PRAY
Father, when my heart feels like criticizing others, mold it to become more compassionate by speaking the truth in love. Remind me that it’s not about what I say or do but what You will do through me. Teach me how to gently rebuke those close to me so they can redirect their steps and follow You. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
APPLICATION
Meet with a close friend or accountability partner. Ask them about areas you need to improve and how you can become a better friend or follower of Christ. Listen and take note of their responses.
