Listen, Slow Down, Keep Cool

Human nature kasi iyan. Sabi nga ng isang kanta, “I was born this way.”
By God’s grace, you can be someone who is “quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry” (James 1:19, NIV).
How to be quick to listen? Stop whatever it is you’re doing and focus on the person who’s speaking. Pakinggan nang mabuti ang ikinukuwento niyang concern or personal problem. Pay attention sa lahat ng kanyang sinasabi. Also, be sensitive to what is not being said. Sometimes, mas importante pa ‘yun than the words being used. Listen with compassion. And do not make any judgment.
How to be slow to speak? Do not blame the person or the other people involved. And be careful not to recite Bible verses na parang Band-Aid solution. Sure, there’s an appropriate Scripture for every situation, but just be there first for the person and give them your shoulder to cry on. Pakinggan mo lang siya at damayan. And most importantly, spend time in prayer.
How to be slow to anger? Hindi mo ito kayang gawin without the help of the Holy Spirit. Surrender your quick temper to the Lord. To avoid saying or doing something you might regret, slowly count from 1 to 20, taking deep breaths in between. Kung pakiramdam mo na sasabog ka na, excuse yourself and go to a private place to cool down. OK lang takbuhan ang possible na confrontation. Let God handle the situation.

LET’S PRAY
Lord, ang hirap maging quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger. But by Your grace, I will obey. Tulungan Mo po ako.
