Have you ever heard of the saying, “Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me?” That’s not true! Every word we say is significant. Our words have the power to bring love, joy, laughter, and healing. But at the same time, our words can rip people to shreds.

Proverbs 13:3 says, “Whoever guards his mouth preserves his life; he who opens wide his lips comes to ruin.” To help us, we need to ask ourselves this question, “God, ano ang gusto Ninyong sabihin ko?”

It’s also a plea for us to control ourselves with everything that we say.

When we’re too busy when people talk to us, we might be tempted to give hollow praise or bad advice, which may be just as destructive as nasty retorts in a fight, or carelessly dropping words that can hurt someone.

Our words have power.

Next time you want to say hurtful or empty words, pray and ask God to guard your mouth.

LET’S PRAY

Lord, guard my mouth so I don’t speak ill of others. Help me to build people up rather than tear them down. Help me to encourage and inspire others. Help me to recognize when my family members, neighbors, and friends need love, grace, and forgiveness when they make errors or fail terribly, and show me what I need to do to correct them.

APPLICATION

On a sheet of paper, list down words, phrases or sentences that you can use to build others up. For instance, you can write, “I love you,” or “Thank you for your help.” Afterward, post this on your refrigerator so that you won’t forget to say them to others!
