Welcome to the last part of our series “Taming the Tongue.”

Ang pumipigil sa kanyang dila ay umiiwas sa masama.

Mga Kawikaan 21:23

Have you ever said something and then regretted it the moment the words came out of your mouth?

Many people can relate, like Annie. She saw Janet at a mall, a friend she hadn’t seen for a while, and made a comment about the other’s extreme weight loss. “Naku, nasobrahan ka na yata sa pagda-diet.” Janet smiled and replied, “Kakalabas ko lang kasi ng ospital a week ago after my two-month confinement. Ngayon pa lang ako bumabawi sa pagkain.”

When Annie heard it, napahiya siya sa sinabi. Gusto niyang malamon ng lupa at that moment. To make it up to her friend, she said, “Sorry for what I said, Janet. I didn’t know. May time ka ba? Magmeryenda muna tayo. Sagot ko.”

If you want to avoid Annie’s mistake, here are some tips:

1. Think before you speak Iwasang sabihin ang unang bagay na pumapasok sa isip mo. Salain mo muna at isipin kung mao-offend mo ba ang kausap mo.
2. Check your heart Sabi sa Luke 6:45 (ESV) na “out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.” If you find yourself saying the wrong things over and over again, the problem may not be your mouth but your heart. Ask God to cleanse your heart like a spring, so it can produce clean, refreshing water again.
3. Avoid unwholesome talk Follow the Apostle Paul’s advice in Ephesians 4:29 (NLT), “Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.”

Bless others instead of offending them with your words. May everything that will come out of your mouth make people smile and honor the Lord.

Our tongue is a powerful part of our being. By submitting to God, we can, by His power and grace, tame our tongue. Why don’t you use your tongue to proclaim God’s power and to let other people know about Tanglaw? See you tomorrow!

LET’S PRAY

Dear Lord, like the psalmist, I ask, “Set a guard over my mouth, Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips.” Huwag Mo pong hayaang makasakit ako sa iba gamit ang aking mga salita.

APPLICATION

Have you recently offended somebody with your words? Even if you ended it with, “Joke lang,” baka nakasakit ka pa rin. Go to the person and make things right by apologizing. Huwag kang mahiyang burahin ang ginawang masama. Do this every time until being careful with your tongue becomes second nature to you.
