Mga Taga-Filipos 2:4–5

Does the Bible say anything about how we should treat our parents?  

In Ephesians 6:2–3, Apostle Paul reminds us to honor our parents for this is the first command with a promise (see also Exodus 20:12). Sa Filipino culture, likas sa atin ang paggalang sa mga magulang at nakatatanda. Kaya may mga salita tayong “po” at “opo” at pagmamano sa tuwing darating at iiwan ang nakakatanda. But honoring our parents is not just about these gestures and words. He further reminds Christians through his letter to Timothy of their first responsibility to show godliness at home and repay their parents by taking care of them. This is something that pleases God (1 Timothy 5:4). The Bible teaches us that honoring our parents is not just about talking to them respectfully and considering their advice, but also taking care of and looking after their welfare. Jesus Himself modeled this. Sa huling sandali Niya sa krus ay ibinilin Niya ang kanyang inang si Mary kay Apostle John (John 19:26–27). Jesus was so concerned about His mother’s welfare that He entrusted her to His disciple.

Kailan mo huling binisita ang mga magulang mo? O kung kasama mo sila sa bahay, kailan kayo huling kumain sa labas? Kailan kayo huling nagkumustahan sa phone o video call? Tumatanda na rin sila at ang lakas nila ay hindi na tulad noong kabataan nila. Kaya kung ang sagot mo sa mga ito ay “matagal na” o “hindi ko na matandaan,” will you take this opportunity to honor and show love to your parents?
