Ang famous gospel hymn na “On Christ the Solid Rock I Stand” ay isinulat ni Edward Mote noong 1834. Lumaki siyang palaboy-laboy sa kalye dahil busy ang mga magulang niya sa pag-asikaso sa bar nila. He heard about the gospel at age 16, was baptized at age 18, and was already 55 when he committed to serve as a pastor.

Almost 40 years siyang nagtrabaho bilang cabinet maker at kailanma’y hindi niya nalimutan ang Panginoon. Noong minsang papasok siya ng trabaho, naisip niyang magsulat ng isang hymn about the “Gracious Experience of a Christian,” at nabuo niya ang chorus na:

On Christ the Solid Rock I stand

All other ground is sinking sand.

His fellow churchmates were encouraged that they even requested a copy of it. Kaya naman nag-print siya ng libo-libong kopya at pinamigay sa kanila. Many years later, the Lord granted his desire to serve as a pastor. He was already nearing his senior age when he became one, yet he faithfully served for 21 years with no absence on Sundays.
