Ang paningin ni Yahweh ay nakatuon sa lahat ng lugar, ang masama at mabuti ay pawang minamasdan.

Mga Kawikaan 15:3

Have you heard of the term “evil eyes”? Ito ay isang superstition wherein people believe that a malicious glance can cause bad things to happen to other people. It is considered a curse that can affect a person’s health, wealth, and even their life. This superstitious belief is said to be around for a long time and across different traditions and cultures. Until today, many people believe this and fear its effect. People are even afraid to post their achievements in social media because some evil eye may cast a spell against their success.

Ngunit may katotohanan nga ba ang paniniwalang ito? May sinasabi ba ang Bible tungkol sa evil eyes? The Bible does mention an expression referring to an evil eye sa Proverbs 23:6: “Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats“ Ngunit ito ay hindi literal kung hindi metaphorical lang. Ang pinakamalapit na konsepto ng evil eye sa Scriptures ay makikita 1 Pedro 5:8 kung saan ang diyablo ay laging nakaabang for someone to devour. Satan not only accuses but his evil eyes are also always searching for an opportunity to steal, kill, and destroy. He tried it with Adam, with Job, and with Jesus, but he failed. Through the finished work of Jesus on the cross, Satan’s evil eyes were defeated. It is finished!

Living without fear of the evil eyes is possible through faith in Christ. Lagi nating tatandaan that God gave us not a spirit of fear but of power, love and self-control (2 Timothy 1:7). Whenever we feel that people are looking at us with malice, find refuge in the Lord (Psalm 91:1). Remember that God’s eyes are always searching for those whose hearts are blameless and want to support them (2 Chronicles 16:9). Lastly, the eyes of the Lord are on those who fear Him and hope in His steadfast love (Psalm 33:18).
