Tumayo si Jesus at tinanong ang babae, “Nasaan sila? Wala na bang humahatol sa iyo?” “Wala po, Ginoo,” sagot ng babae. Sinabi ni Jesus, “Hindi rin kita hahatulan. Umuwi ka na, at mula ngayon ay huwag ka nang gumawa ng kasalanan.”

Juan 8:10–11

Have you done something really wrong and shameful that you cannot undo? Sobrang palpak na ba ang tingin mo sa iyong sarili? Or, meron ka bang kakilalang sa tingin mo ay wala nang pag-asang magbago? At lalong imposibleng maging follower ni Jesus?

Nag-commit ng adultery ang babaeng itinulak ng Jewish leaders sa harapan ni Cristo. Based sa Jewish law, she should be stoned to death. Ine-expect nila na itataguyod ni Jesus ang law at makikisama Siya sa kanila in stoning the adulterous woman. Pero binigo sila ni Jesus. Instead, Jesus gave the woman a second chance to start again and abandon sin. No doubt na naging follower ni Jesus ang babaeng ito. In fact, isa sa female followers ni Jesus ay meron ding checkered past tulad niya, si Mary Magdalene. And yet, kay Mary Magdalene unang nagpakita si Jesus when He rose from the dead.

Maraming characters sa Bible ang binigyan ng Diyos ng second chance. Isa na rito si Apostle Paul. Before he encountered the risen Christ on the road to Damascus, kilala siya sa pangalang Saul. He was the number one persecutor of the early church. “Sinikap ni Saulo na wasakin ang iglesya; pinapasok niya ang mga bahay-bahay, at ang mga mananampalataya ay kanyang kinakaladkad at ibinibilanggo …” (Mga Gawa 8:3). But Jesus called him to preach the Gospel to the Gentiles. And the letters he wrote to the churches comprise a large part of the New Testament.

Hitik sa kuwento ng second chances ang Biblia. Sa Old Testament, nandiyan sina Moses who killed an Egyptian, si David who committed adultery, at ang balong si Ruth. Sa New Testament, nandiyan ang Samaritanang anim na lalaki ang kinasama, ang kurakot na tax collector na si Zacchaeus, at ang naduwag na si Peter who denied Jesus three times! And yet, with the God of second chances, they accomplished their mission in His great plan of salvation.
