Selfish or Self-Care?

Welcome to part 5 of our series “Healthy and Well.” So far, we’ve learned about the importance of eating right, getting enough sleep and rest, and avoiding harmful substances. Today we will learn about taking care of our mental and emotional health.

“Lumapit kayo sa akin, kayong lahat na nahihirapan at nabibigatang lubha sa inyong pasanin, at kayo’y bibigyan ko ng kapahingahan.”

Mateo 11:28

Kapag tayo ay nahihirapan, nalulungkot, o may mabibigat na mga emosyon, do we let others know about it?

Minsan struggle ito para sa atin, lalo na kung nasanay tayong sabihin na OK lang tayo kahit hindi. Siguro, nahihiya tayong aminin na may negative emotions tayo dahil akala natin na dapat laging masaya at positive ang isang Christian. O kaya akala natin na iisipin ng iba na “selfish” tayo if we try to express what we really feel or take some time to focus on our mental well-being and self-care.

Unang-una, lagi nating tandaan na ine-encourage tayo ni Lord na lumapit sa Kanya kapag tayo ay nahihirapan. It is OK to feel not OK and cry out to the Lord. “Tinutulungan niya, mga nagdurusa at di binibigo ang walang pag-asa” (Awit 34:18). There will be times when we feel negative emotions and need to focus on taking care of our mental and emotional health. Self-care is not selfish because we need to take care of all our God-given parts: body, spirit, and mind. 

The Lord can also send us help for our mental and emotional health in different ways: through loved ones who show us compassion, church elders who pray for us, and mental health professionals who help us process our thoughts and emotions. At siyempre, kasama natin ang Holy Spirit na nagbibigay ng pag-asa at kapayapaan.

Lord, thank You for being there kapag nahihirapan at nabibigatan na ako sa buhay. Help me to practice mental and emotional self-care.

Ano ang mga negative emotions na nararamdaman mo lately? What have you been struggling with? Be honest at ilabas mo ang mga ito kay Lord. Puwede mo rin itong i-share sa isang trusted friend or prayer partner who can pray with and for you.
