Are you done with your Christmas gift shopping? Gaano kahaba ang Christmas list mo? This is the season when most people go all out and over their budget just to buy gifts for people they love. Many believe that this tradition was inspired by the gifts of the magi, wise men from the east who visited Jesus and brought Him gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

The Gift of the Magi is the title of O. Henry’s short story written in 1905. It tells of a poor young couple, James and Della, who wanted to give meaningful gifts to each other. Kahit walang-wala, they still thought of a way to surprise the other. Della, who has beautiful long hair, cuts it and sells it to a wig maker to buy her husband a fob chain for his antique gold watch. Meanwhile, he pawns his treasured watch to buy tortoiseshell combs for her hair. Yes, they surprised each other but in an unexpected way. Although neither of them were able to use the gift, this story celebrates the beauty of sacrificial and extravagant love in the act of profound giving!

God the Father, in sending Jesus, has given us the best gift we can ever receive. After us being spiritually separated from Him because of sin, God gave His only Son, Jesus, to bridge the gap. We read in John 3:16 (Phillips), “For God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that every one who believes in him shall not be lost, but should have eternal life.”

This Christmas, in the middle of the giving and receiving gifts, take the time to celebrate what you have been given by God. Then you will know that even the most expensive gift you can receive from others will pale in comparison with what — or who — God gave.
