Welcome to the last part of our series “Lessons from Elijah”. What could we learn this time? Let’s find out.

Pumasok siya sa isang yungib at doon nagpalipas ng gabi. Walang anu-ano’y nagsalita sa kanya si Yahweh, “Anong ginagawa mo rito, Elias?”

1 Mga Hari 19:9

Anna was busy working on her presentation on her computer. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw her six-year-old son Matthew take a crayon and draw on the wall. He should have known better than to do that. After all, ilang beses na rin itong sinabihan ng mga magulang niya that his crayons are meant for his coloring books only.

“Matthew, what are you doing?” Anna said. Nagulat ang bata at mabilis na itinago ang hawak na crayon sa likod niya. “Nothing, Mommy!” ang sagot niya. But when he saw her mother’s eyes fixed on the wall, he knew that he had been found out. Moved by guilt, he ran to his mother, embraced her and through his tears said, “I’m sorry, Mommy. I drew on the wall. Don’t be mad.”

God, many times, has also asked questions. In Genesis 3:9 (NIV), we read, “But the Lord God called to the man, ‘Where are you?’” Why ask Adam when He knew exactly where the man was? This kind of questioning happened again, this time to His prophet Elijah. He asked Elijah who was hiding in a cave, “What are you doing here?”

There is no reason for our omniscient God to ask where we are or what we are doing. He sees everything. He knows where the border of the universe is and can see the bottom of the deepest sea. Could it be that God, in His questioning, simply wants to have a conversation with us? That He wants to give us a chance to come clean and be honest with Him?

Elijah spilled his heart out to God who sought him. Nagpakatotoo siya at sinagot ang tanong ng Diyos. How about you? Are you a prodigal who ran away from the Father and is now in a place of sin? When He asks you, “What are you doing here?” all He wants you to do is come back to Him.

LET’S PRAY

I can never hide anything from You, God. You know where I am and what I do. Help me to avoid temptation as I fix my eyes on You.

APPLICATION

Stop running away from God and walk toward Him instead. Someday, it will be music to your ears to hear Him say, “You are finally home.”
