Mapalad ang mga nagugutom at nauuhaw sa katuwiran, sapagkat sila’y bubusugin.

Mateo 5:6

Everybody seems to be hungry these days — and not just for food. Those hooked on social media are hungry for the latest viral gossip. Many people online are hungry for attention and create all kinds of videos to gain thousands of likes. Many in politics are hungry for power. Many in business are hungry for money. People can’t get enough, and they remain hungry no matter how much they achieve or accumulate.

What are you hungry for? In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus spoke of a hunger and thirst that He promises to fill — the hunger and thirst for righteousness.

Jesus also told His followers to not be anxious about what they will eat or drink, because our Heavenly Father knows we need these. Instead, we should seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness (Matthew 6:33). To hunger for righteousness is to yearn for God’s rule in our lives. Ibig sabihin, matindi ang pagnanais natin na maghari ang Diyos sa ating buhay.

When we’re hungry because it’s already time for lunch or dinner, don’t we put everything aside and rush to the dinner table to have our fill? We respond with urgency to the growling of our stomach. We work hard to make sure that our families eat at least three meals a day. Hungry people work hard, urgently, to gain food.

To hunger for righteousness is to work hard, urgently, to make God’s rule evident where we live. We work hard to promote God’s cause in our communities, in business, in education, in politics, and every aspect of our society.

Dear friend, do you hunger for righteousness? Do you pursue holiness in your personal life? In your social life? Let your hunger be for God, and you will surely be filled. Ang pangako ni Jesus, bubusugin ka Niya.

LET’S PRAY

Lord, forgive me for how I have hungered for things that do not truly satisfy me. Put a holy hunger in my heart, that I may seek Your righteousness not just in my life but also in this place where You have planted me.

APPLICATION

Think and pray about how you can answer this question, “How can I develop a holy hunger?”
