“You’re Gonna Have to Serve Somebody”
Josue 24:15.
Sa awit niyang “Gotta Serve Somebody,” Bob Dylan has raised an existential question. Para kanino ka ba nabubuhay? Sino ba talaga ang pinaglilingkuran mo?
Sabi ng awit, kahit sino ka man—ambassador to England, heavyweight champion, socialite, businessman, doctor, preacher, construction worker, mistress, rich, or poor: “You’re gonna have to serve somebody … it may be the devil or it may be the Lord, but you’re gonna have to serve somebody.”
Sabi pa nito, kahit ano pa ang sinusuot mo, o anong gusto mong inumin o kainin; sa sahig ka man natutulog o sa isang king-sized bed—“You’re gonna have to serve somebody.”
It’s between the devil and the Lord! Puwede pa natin idagdag dito ang isa pang option: ang self.
May mga taong obviously serving the devil, tulad ng drug lords, syndicates, at killers for hire. Sabi nga ni Bob Dylan, “You may be a preacher with your spiritual pride. You may be a city councilman taking bribes on the side.”
Donating big money in exchange for our name on a building’s wall. Doing short-term missions para maka-travel overseas.
Whatever we do, whatever our motive, we’re doing it for somebody. It’s because we were created for Somebody.
The truth is: Every man and woman is created for God’s glory (Isaias 43:7). Ang Diyos lang ang worthy “to receive glory and honor and power” dahil Siya ang lumikha sa atin (Pahayag 4:11). Tanggapin man natin o hindi ang katotohanang ito, this truth will not ever change. Echoing Bob Dylan, “it may be the devil or it may be the Lord”—idagdag na natin na it may be yourself—“but you’re gonna have to serve somebody.” Make your choice today.
LET’S PRAY
Help me to serve You every day of my life. Amen.
